World Arthritis Day 2022: Foods to eat and avoid in case of arthritis | health

World Arthritis Day 2022: World Arthritis Day, an annual celebration dedicated to spreading awareness about rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases, is celebrated on October 12 every day. Arthritis, an inflammatory disorder of the joints that affects the joints and other connective tissues, causes unbearable pain. Although there is no cure for the disease, early diagnosis can help manage symptoms. The theme for World Arthritis Day this year is – “It’s In Your Hands, Take Action” and aims to encourage people with arthritis, caregivers, families and others to take advantage of every opportunity to take action to improve their lifestyle. Nutrition and physical activity can be of great importance in a disease such as arthritis, and eliminating inflammatory foods and adding healthy, nutritious food items can improve the well-being of people with arthritis. “Arthritis patients can benefit from anti-inflammatory diets, which include foods such as green leafy vegetables and other colorful vegetables. An exclusion regimen is the most effective way to identify inflammation-causing agents. Essential foods, such as vegetables, sweet potatoes, and quinoa, are the first step in this process. Because it creates minimal inflammation,” says Dr. Anant Bandhir, MD, Medical Director – Dr. Hedgwar Hospital, BAVP.

Here are some foods and drinks to eat and avoid according to Dr. Bhargava and Dr. Pandhari if you have arthritis:

Foods to avoid in arthritis

• Increased sugar: You should limit your sugar intake if you suffer from arthritis. Avoid added sugars found in foods like candy, ice cream, soda, etc., including less obvious ones like barbecue sauce.

• fried meat, Frozen foods, baked goods, packaged meals, and snacks are all harmful for arthritis sufferers, so they should be avoided.

• Processed and red meat: Some research links red meat and processed meat to inflammation and can increase arthritis symptoms. Just as the protein in milk and dairy products can irritate the tissues around the joints, the saturated fats in red meat can promote inflammation and raise cholesterol levels.

• Consumption of large quantities of corn, safflower, sunflower, peanut and soy oils, Rich in omega-6 fatty acids, it can harm the health of people with arthritis.

• Saturated fats and advanced glycation end products (AGEs) Both are prevalent in mayonnaise, margarine, cream cheese, butter, and cheese, all of which are best avoided. The consumption of these items should be limited as they promote inflammation.

• Alcohol: Alcohol is known to aggravate arthritis symptoms. Therefore, anyone with symptoms of arthritis should limit or avoid alcohol intake.

• Vegetable oils: Diets that are high in omega-6 fats and low in omega-3 fats may worsen symptoms of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

• Inflammation and joint pain It has been shown to be exacerbated by eating eggs regularly. Egg yolks are considered anti-inflammatory because they contain high levels of arachidonic acid. Eggs contain saturated fats that are linked to joint pain and should be eaten in smaller quantities.

• Foods rich in saltAvoid foods like cheese, canned soup, shrimp, pizza, and processed items.

Foods to eat in arthritis

Many foods can reduce inflammation and may help relieve some of the joint pain associated with this health condition. Here are some foods to eat if you have arthritis:

Fat fish: It is high in omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin D, which are known to reduce inflammation and the severity of arthritis symptoms.

• garlic: It has been found that garlic has anti-inflammatory properties and that eating it may reduce the risk of osteoporosis. Ongoing research suggests that eating ginger, turmeric, and garlic is linked to a lower risk of osteoporosis due to their anti-inflammatory effects.

• Ginger: Ginger has been shown to reduce arthritis symptoms.

• Broccoli: Broccoli contains sulforaphane which is known for its anti-inflammatory properties and helps treat arthritis.

• Walnuts: It is high in omega-3 fatty acids that may relieve symptoms of arthritis as well as inflammation.
