The study found that a diet high in sugar and exercise are less harmful for men than women

October 31, 2022 – A new study shows that a sedentary lifestyle and excessive sugar intake have more negative effects on men than women. The men also experienced a decrease in a protein called adrobin – a key biomarker of cardiovascular disease and a regulator of insulin sensitivity.

Furthermore, the researchers note that the study demonstrates how men and women may respond differently to these changes.

“These findings underscore the sex-related difference in the development of insulin resistance in the blood vessels caused by adopting a lifestyle high in sugar and little exercise,” says Camila Manrique-Acevedo, MD, associate professor of medicine at the University of Missouri.

“To our knowledge, this is the first evidence in humans that short-term negative lifestyle changes can elicit vascular insulin resistance, and is the first documentation of sex-related differences in the development of vascular insulin resistance in association with changes in adrobin levels.”

Obesity and type 2 diabetes are associated with vascular insulin resistance, which exacerbates vascular disease.

The effect of reduced exercise

By subjecting 36 healthy young men and women to 10 days of reduced physical activity — their daily step count decreased from 10,000 to 5,000 — researchers can investigate vascular insulin resistance. The participants also increased their daily intake of sugary drinks to six cans of soda.

After decreased physical activity and increased consumption of sugar-rich soft drinks, healthy young men but not women showed a slow leg blood flow response to insulin and inhibition of skeletal muscle microvascular perfusion.

More previous research and reports
In the future, the researchers would like to look at the time it takes to reverse these metabolic and vascular changes and do a more comprehensive assessment of the effect of sex on the onset of vascular insulin resistance.
