Man Loses 4 Stones With the “Yellow Label” Diet Plan – “You Saved My Life”

Dean, 46, quit his job as an NHS recruitment manager to take care of his husband, who died earlier this year. Then he found his knack for shopping and slimming on a budget and decided to follow a very healthy diet made from the “yellow label” supermarket products.

At his heaviest, the Slimman weighed 18 stone but has managed to maintain his new weight at 13 stone since joining Slimming World.

He explained: “We had to move forward with the benefits and the money was a lot less than it had ever been before. I couldn’t go to the store and buy anything and not think about the price anymore.

“At first I was ashamed to put yellow label foods in my basket, but then I realized someone was going to buy it and that was better than wasting it all.”

Dean, who has always enjoyed being creative in the kitchen, started with Slimming World’s Optimal Eating Plan where he only used foods labeled in the supermarket.

He explained, “I’ve always loved my food and always had that thing for chopping dishes and figuring out how to make it and how I could make it myself.

“When I joined Slimming World, I turned this into a challenge of how to make Slimming World versions of the meals I enjoyed – like chibi tea, curries and roasted dishes. It amazed me that there wasn’t anything you couldn’t eat so often we had dinner parties and wouldn’t have One clue that they were eating a slimming world friendly dinner.

“I’ll have a piece of ham for £5 in the yellow label department, then freeze it, and then every Sunday I grill eight of us with meat, roast potatoes and loads of veggies, and it’ll cost less than £10 in total.”

Dean joined Slimming World in 2010 with his late husband Gary to lose weight before their wedding.

He had lost four stones in that time and was able to keep them, but Gary fell ill after a few years. Talking about the time his husband was diagnosed with the tumor, Dean recalls: “I didn’t sleep or take care of myself at all.

“I’d have a quick car-to-car breakfast, lunch would be something of a hospital canteen, and I’d grab a quick bite for tea on the way home from the hospital.

“Not surprisingly, my weight went back up and I ended up on antidepressants too. I knew I had to start taking care of myself or I would never be able to take care of Gary.”

Dean said of his Slimming World experience: “I’ve never known anything like the feeling I had in church hall when I first joined Slimming World, we were like a family, so I knew I didn’t need to be ashamed to go back and admit I gained the weight. I was I need to go back where I left off and be part of a group of people on the same journey again.

“I always say Slimming World saved my life. Not just because of losing weight again – I’ve lost four stones now and would like to lose about another stone – but because of the other members and support.”

Dean continued, “By talking to people and being part of the group, I started to re-realize my self-esteem and I didn’t feel lonely anymore. I realized that other people are going through their own things and we share it together.”

“I learn a lot from the other members as well. Everyone has different experiences and backgrounds and it all comes together, so for example, if you don’t know what to do with a certain food, you can be sure that someone will.”

Dean admitted he feels completely different now that he’s lost a lot of weight: “I didn’t appreciate how much my weight affected me – just little things like bending over to do my shoelaces and walking to the store are so much easier now.

“I can’t wait to help others in the same way and I know Gary would be very proud to do something for me. I used to think it was selfish to do something for myself, and now I know I can’t help anyone else if I’m not feeling well.”

Dean’s List Before:

Breakfast: Double sausage, egg sandwich and hash brown with orange juice

Lunch: beetroot ciabatta and goat cheese

Dinner: Chinese or Indian ready meals

Snacks: 2 packs of chips, a piece of chocolate and a cupcake.

Dean’s List After:

Breakfast: A cooked breakfast of scrambled eggs, mushrooms, tomatoes, lean bacon, Slimming World sausage patties (from the Slimming World food group in Iceland), beans and whole wheat toast

Lunch: Chicken salad with chicken, lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, red onions, beetroot and low-fat cheese.

Dinner: Spaghetti Bolognese with two slices of garlic bread

Snacks: Fat-free cottage cheese with apples, Bepps Black Eyed Peas snacks, fresh fruits.
