Learn how to quickly assess your patient’s diet

Dietary changes are known to be a major risk factor for premature death and disability in the United States, yet medical students spend an average of just 19 hours over four years in medical school learning about nutrition.

Stephen Davies, MD, said that statistic has to change.

“Nutrition has not been recognized as a priority in medical education,” said Dr. DeVries, executive director of the nonprofit Gables Institute and assistant professor of nutrition at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. “Medical educators often report that they do not have enough time in the curriculum, and my answer is: What deserves more attention than the major risk of premature death and disability?”

Dr. Davies still remembers early in his career as a cardiologist seeing the return of patients with severe heart problems.

“We’d fix them up and send them abroad and often they’d come back again,” he said.

It was then that he realized that medicine and technology could not be the only options to stop these recurring problems. Over the course of his career, he’s seen a decline in death rates from cardiovascular disease, but in recent years, he said, the rate has stabilized despite continued technological advances.

The course also includes how to perform a rapid nutritional assessment of the patient. Dr. Davies said the course teaches how health professionals can work with their patients once an assessment has been made to explain any deficiencies and understand the patient’s priorities moving forward.

“Having the knowledge is not going to have an impact unless you apply it, and you apply it in a very crowded clinical environment,” said Dr. Davies. “That’s what we put in place to help doctors do.”
