Local parents share experiences in the field of intergenerational health

FThe Airfax County Health Department’s Facebook Live series, Hope, Health and Parenting, highlights how local parents are modeling healthy behaviors that transcend generations.

As part of the ongoing series, Anthony Mingo, director of communication and community engagement for the Fairfax County Department of Health, has interviewed six parents, so far, about promoting healthy habits. These fall into the four pillars of health – physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual – and the conversations provide potential tools or strategies that other parents can consider applying with their children and families.

Here are three key excerpts shared in recent conversations:

1. Lead by example

The best way to inculcate lasting healthy habits is to lead by example. When parents model healthy eating, physical activity, and attention to their mental, emotional, and spiritual health, their children may be more likely to adopt the same healthy behaviors. Series of interviews with key community partners (who are also parents), including doctors, religious leaders and others serving youth from across the region.

“Children learn not what they hear, but what they see,” said Reverend Dr. Robert Kennedy, who leads the Emmanuel Center of Worship in the Alexandria area. “Time we spend in the garden, time we spend in church, time we spend in spiritual relationships, time we spend looking after ourselves, these are the things they see.”

Dr. Sergio Rimola, Herndon resident physician, is setting an example for his children by integrating health into family activities. They spend time outside together, go on picnics, cook and eat healthy meals as a family. Dr. Fabian Sandoval, who founded the Emerson Community Clinic (and the Emerson Diversity Health Foundation), to help support uninsured patients, also incorporates healthy behaviors into the time he spends with his son. “I really encourage [my son] To go out and do activities with me… We are building a stadium for him now, and we are doing it together.”

2. Be present

“Whether you are staying with your children or not, you have an active role to play,” said Chambana Bernard, Father Engagement Supervisor at the Department of Family Services.

Of course, not all parents are in the same situation. Some parents live with their children and see them every day, and some don’t. Some parents are stay-at-home parents and others have jobs that keep them away from home or limit the time they can spend with the family. Regardless of the situation, it is important to find ways to be present.

When you create these experiences with [children]practice, do it together, you also create great memories, and those memories will help drive these behaviors when [they] You have [their] Kids someday… This is really important that some parents have missed, especially those of us who are very busy, so we have to improve the time we spend with our kids,” Mingo said.

3. Dependent parents make supportive parents

Parents don’t have to do this alone. When facing challenges or feeling overwhelmed, there is no shame in asking for help. “When we feel the tension is overwhelming, there’s always a good opportunity to talk about it. You can talk to a friend…your chaplain…your partner, but don’t keep it inside,” Rimula said.

Seeking support benefits not only parents, but their children as well. Reaching out and getting help helps prevent these stresses from being placed on children. “It’s not their fault that we’re having a bad day,” Sandoval said. “Don’t take it on them.” “Don’t put the stresses of life into those special bonding moments.”
