Chennai: Breakfast is basically brain food, so the food choices we make for the first meal of the day can have a huge impact on our health, especially our hormonal health. A breakfast rich in carbohydrates and sugar will increase the demand for insulin which in turn upsets the hormonal balance. Dr. Thangamani, Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, Dr. Mohan Specialist Diabetes Center, thinks about the do’s and don’ts about how to make your breakfast healthy. She says the best breakfast is one that balances all the essential nutrients.

Diet and cortisol

Cortisol hormones have a secretion pattern that rises during the night and decreases during the day. If one of the hormones malfunctions, it will affect the other hormones as well. Excess cortisol will likely increase blood sugar, leading to insulin resistance. Cortisol disruption is caused by a number of factors – stress, unhealthy eating habits, and irregular sleep patterns. “Most working people these days either skip breakfast or consume prepared, processed foods, which is very unhealthy,” says Dr. Thangamani. “Some of our traditional breakfast recipes work very well because they are balanced in terms of the nutrition they provide.”

Additional tips for breakfast

  • Add a handful of nuts to your breakfast – cashews, almonds, walnuts, etc. – preferably without dry roasting or adding salt.
  • Adding vegetables will naturally increase the fiber content of your breakfast, and fiber is essential for balancing your blood sugar.
  • Ginger, with its anti-inflammatory properties, is a great addition to breakfast.
  • Coffee can be consumed in limited quantities. Green tea and vegetable juices are alternatives.
